Eighty-Four Players, One Scholarship: The 37th Golf Classic in Review
On Tuesday, October 20, President Joshua Davis took the floor to look back at the 37th Annual Capital City Golf Classic. The tournament was played on Monday, September 28, at North Ridge Country Club, and Josh brought the final figures. The headline: the tournament netted $30,067 for the Robert N. Styres Scholarship.

A Day at North Ridge
Eighty-four players took to the course. Before the shotgun start, carts lined up outside the clubhouse, players browsed the raffle table, and the big Rotary wheel stood watch over the practice green. It was a long day for the volunteers who ran registration, sold raffle tickets and mulligans, and kept the morning on schedule. Their work is a large part of that final number.

Where the Money Goes
The Robert N. Styres Scholarship is a four-year, renewable award for a Wake County public high school graduate. The committee looks past the top GPA to students who have overcome real adversity. Our club set it up in 2000 in memory of member Bob Styres, and the Golf Classic has raised money for the club's scholarship and community projects every fall since 1989.
The Rotary Foundation, From One of Our Own
The second half of the morning went global. Member Erik Grunwald of Cardinal Business Forms walked us through The Rotary Foundation and the benefits of supporting it. The Rotary Foundation is Rotary International's own charitable arm, separate from our club's foundation. It funds work to promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, support education, save mothers and children, and grow local economies. For a closer look, read our earlier piece, What Is The Rotary Foundation? Our thanks also go to Erik for the photos from Tuesday.
Why We Serve
The two talks pointed in the same direction. One sends a local student to college. The other reaches communities around the world. Both start with people who give their time and money so that someone else gets a fair chance.
The Four-Way Test asks: Will it be beneficial to all concerned? A golf day that becomes a scholarship answers that question. So does a dollar given to The Rotary Foundation. That is Service Above Self at both ends of the map.
Come and Join Us
We meet every Tuesday at 7:30 AM at Carolina Country Club, 2500 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, and on Zoom. Our next social is the member cookout at the Stag Club on Wednesday, November 4, and spouses are welcome. Visitors are always welcome, on the course or at the breakfast table.
