Members of the Rotary Club of the Capital City teamed up with The Green Chair Project—a Wake County nonprofit that has been furnishing homes for families overcoming homelessness, crisis, or disaster since 2010, to clean and prepare donated furniture and home essentials, helping turn empty houses into comfortable, dignified homes for local families.

Rotary Club volunteers gathered for an introduction from Green Chair’s Volunteer & Community Coordinator Catherine Amos, kicking off a day of meaningful service in support of families overcoming crisis.

Our Furniture Crew tackled donated pieces with care, cleaning and preparing quality furnishings that will help create a dignified home for a local family in Wake County.

The Kitchen Team inspected, sorted, and packed over 40 donated appliances each one destined to make mealtime possible in a once-empty kitchen.
Rolling Up Our Sleeves: Serving with The Green Chair Project

Event Date: June 27, 2025
Last month, Rotary Club of the Capital City members did what Rotarians do best: we rolled up our sleeves, got a little dusty, and made a difference. On June 27th, our club partnered with The Green Chair Project, a Raleigh-based nonprofit that helps families recovering from homelessness, crisis, or disaster turn empty housing into true homes.
And we do mean true homes, complete with couches, coffee makers, and that “welcome home” feeling.
The Green Chair Project provides gently used furniture and household essentials to families transitioning into permanent housing many of whom are moving in with little more than a sleeping bag and a few personal items. Their mission is built on dignity, stability, and second chances. When we learned they needed help sorting, cleaning, and prepping donations, we said “we’re in.”
Teamwork Makes the Dream Home
We split into two energized crews:
🪑 The Furniture Team scrubbed and prepped 38 furniture pieces, transforming donations into polished treasures ready to brighten new living rooms.
🍳 The Kitchen Team tested, packed, and labeled 40+ appliances—everything from toasters to coffee makers, all destined to restore daily comfort for local families.
Throughout the day, laughter echoed through the warehouse. Friendships deepened. One team member may or may not have named a particularly stubborn recliner “Harold.” And while we were there to serve, we walked away with a fresh reminder of Rotary’s purpose: real people, real needs, real impact.
Why We Serve
The Green Chair Project has helped thousands of families across Wake County since 2010, and their work aligns beautifully with Rotary’s mission of “Service Above Self.” This wasn’t just about furniture it was about restoring normalcy, dignity, and hope to neighbors in transition.
It’s easy to forget how life-changing a lamp or dining chair can be, until you meet someone who’s been sleeping on the floor.
