January 16, 2024 -- The Rotary Club of the Capital City was pleased to have member David Hayden give a talk about his tour of duty as Colonel of the US Army JAG Corps at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. As you will imagine by clicking through this slide show, David told many stories of military life at the airbase and of interactions with the locals.
One story began with the unfortunate camel pictured here crossing an old Russian mine field and not emerging intact. In her claim, the camel's owner stated she was a poor Bedouin widowed by the Taliban, and the camel, a first-place racing camel, was the sole means of sustenance for her and her daughter. The US Army conceded the claim and paid $130 in reparation.
